I’m Zen Greenway. I’m a musician and I have a day job. There, I’ve said it. I know most bios are in the third-person (i.e. Zen Greenway is a musician who is ten feet tall and wears a mouse costume), but I want to talk as myself, not about myself. I have no agent. I have no manager. I have no one else spinning my art into a fabulous, sparkly package. I don’t want to fool you into thinking I do. It’s all me. And I have a day job.
I am a musician because I can’t stop. If I stop, I get very cranky. I know this because I stopped for 10 years and it did not go well. When I started again it was like the Technicolor transition in the Wizard of Oz. One minute, everything’s gray and spinning. The next minute, bam! Everything’s in color and there are people dancing and singing.
So that’s why I do it. I lose something really important if I don’t. I’m not going to lie. I hope someone hears one of my songs and decides it’s the perfect theme for their hit TV show. I hope someday soon music pays me enough to quit my day job. But if it doesn’t, I’ll still be a musician. It’s my real job. It keeps me alive.
